The series is a new collaboration between Steven Moffat and also Mark Gatiss, who both had knowledge adapting or using Victorian literary works for television. Moffat had previously adapted the Strange Case associated with Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde with the 2007 series Jekyll, while Gatiss had created the Dickensian Doctor Exactly who episode “The Unquiet Dead”. Moffat and Gatiss, who are both Physician Who writers, discussed plans for a Holmes adaptation in their numerous train journeys to help Cardiff where Doctor Who production is reliant. The two writers are generally both big Sherlock Holmes followers; Gatiss has said on the Holmes stories that “Whenever When i meet someone who has not read them, I always think they’ve so much fun to come. ” The theme associated with ‘friendship’ appealed to each Gatiss and Moffat. The writers realised that somebody else would have the same idea to generate a modern-day version. While they were in Monte Carlo on an awards ceremony, Moffat’s wife, producer Sue Vertue, sat them down and they started to sort out how they might get it done themselves.
