Proper use of autoradio with an amplifier

November 5, 2011 | Author: | Posted in Business

An aftermarket amplifier is an essential component of any complete car audio system. The amp boosts the signal from the vehicle’s head unit, making for a louder and clearer sound system. Installing the amplifier requires establishment of the amp’s power supply. The power cable for the amp will come directly from the vehicle’s battery. Many vehicle’s will have a path available to route the power cable from the engine compartment to the inside of the vehicle. This article will detail instructions for any vehicle that is not equipped with a viable path.

Lift the hood of the vehicle. Loosen the bolts that hold the negative and positive battery cables to the respective battery terminals. Use a wrench or pliers on the bolts.

Remove the negative battery cable from the battery until the amp has been completely installed.

Remove the positive battery cable from the vehicle’s positive battery terminal. Place the amplifier wiring-kit ring-terminal onto the positive battery terminal post. Replace the positive battery cable clamp over the ring terminal and tighten the cable back around the battery post.

Plug the 16-gauge power supply cable into the ring terminal. Remove the fuse from the ring terminal’s fuse holder.

Drill a hole in the vehicle’s firewall using a 14-mm drill bit. Feed the power supply cable from the ring terminal through the new opening in the firewuse of all and into the vehicle’s passenger cabin.

Remove the stock stereo from the vehicle’s dashboard stereo dock. See the vehicle’s repair manual for removal instructions specific to your vehicle

Disconnect the stereo wiring from the back of the stereo unit, but leave the antenna plugged into the FM antenna outlet.

Plug the stereo wiring into the wiring harness adapter leads. Plug the patch cables (or signal cable and turn-on lead from the amp wiring kit) into the wiring harness adapter leads.

Plug the wiring harness adapter into the back of the stereo. Feed the amplifier wiring (either patch cables or separate signal and turn-on lead cables) through the back of the vacant stereo dock and down to the floor of the vehicle behind the dashboard.

Replace the stereo in the vehicle’s dashboard. Consult the repair manual for specific instructions.

Lay the power cable from the entry point inside the cabin to the location of the amplifier. Common mounting locations for an amp are in the trunk or rear cargo area of the vehicle.

Route the amp wiring from the stereo to the amp via the opposite side of the vehicle as the power supply cable. The power cable will cause interference if routed with the signal cable.

Plug the power supply cable into the input on the amp. Connect the grounding wire (from the amp wiring kit) to the input next to the power connection point. Choose a screw or bolt near the amp and connect the grounding wire. Any point less than 18 inches from the amp and directly connected to the frame of the vehicle will serve as an adequate ground.

Plug the signal and turn-on lead connectors into the corresponding outlets on the amp.

Connect speaker wires to the amplifier to match the number of speakers you wish to receive the boosted signal from the amp. Route the wires to the location of the speakers.

Remove the speakers from their mounts and disconnect the speaker wire from the outlets on the back of the speakers. Plug the speaker wire from the amplifier into the rear speaker inputs and replace the speakers into their mounts. Return to the battery.

Place the negative battery cable clamp back around the negative battery terminal. Tighten the cable’s clamp around the battery terminal. Place the fuse into the ring terminal’s ring terminal and close the vehicle’s hood.
