If you’re building your network marketing business online, you know that generating traffic and leads is one of your highest priorities. There are many ways to generate leads online, but today I want to talk about a special traffic and lead source that is often overlooked: Craigslist Leads!

Most of the time when you think about getting traffic, you think Google, Facebook, YouTube, etc. But then there’s Craigslist-an absolute MONSTER site that just quietly sits in the background, pulling in over 52 million visitors per month. (It’s the 38th most visited site in the world, according to Alexa). And a great number of those visitors are flocking to Craigslist for the “Jobs” and “Gigs” listings.

Now think about that for a second. that’s a massive traffic source of pure opportunity seekers: people actively looking for new ways to make income. While many other traffic sources will require you to take a softer approach, with Craigslist you can actually lead with your main business opportunity (if you do it right).

Here are seven tips for generating massive, targeted leads on Craigslist:

1. Know your audience. Think about the people searching those job classifieds. Of course some of them may currently be unemployed, and really only interested in an actual job. However many of them will be people who already have a job, but they’re dissatisfied with their current situation and looking around for a better alternative. And lots of those folks will be open to learning about a business opportunity or alternative way of generating income, if it’s presented to them in the right way.

2. Create an ad that appeals to your prospect. Step into the shoes of your target audience, and imagine what would appeal to them about what you have to offer. Focus on specific benefits, like the ability to work from home, or with flexible hours. Offer an example of the kind of pay they can generate, short term and long term. Prove enough details to pique curiosity and get attention, but keep it general enough so that they need to call or click through to learn more.

3. Use images in your ads. If you’ve browsed around in Craigslist at all, then you’re already familiar with it’s classic plain-text look for most ads. Make your ad stand out by creating an image to present your offer. Then you can hyperlink that image to your landing page, where they can go to learn more.

4. Track your ads. To get the maximum benefit from your Craigslist campaign, you need to track what is happening with your ads. How many times was your ad presented to a user? How many click-throughs did it get? An excellent tracking service that I have used myself is this one. It includes many cool features, such as the ability to provide alternate URLs for your image and target page (which helps to prevent your ads from being “ghosted” from the listings).

5. Use Video or a sizzle message. You want to guide the viewer of your Craigslist ad to the next step. That can be as simple as providing a phone number with a pre-recorded message about your opportunity (where they can leave a message), or a full capture page with a video that invites your prospect to opt-in for more details. Either way, you want to set up a marketing funnel that helps screen out the those who aren’t serious or qualified, and guides those who are to where you can follow up with them directly.

6. Stay Congruent. What is true for all good online marketing strategies applies to Craigslist leads as well. Whether you create a landing page to introduce what you have, or you direct visitors to a pre-recorded phone “sizzle” message-you want to ensure that what you have to say on the other side is relevant and congruent with what you “promised” them in the ad. Speak to those benefits again, make sure you have matched up what you are presenting with what you know they’re looking for.

7. Win Trust and Credibility. Unfortunately, there are a few unscrupulous people out there who use Craigslist as a means to bait and scam others-and you’ll see lots reminders posted inside of Craigslist to remind everyone of this fact. Set yourself clearly apart from that kind of nonsense and put your prospect’s mind at ease. Be transparent, and make sure there is no way they can confuse what you have to offer with what they’ve been warned about.
